To Break a Curse

Throughout the Practical Magic books, the Owens women live beneath the shadow of a curse that has followed their family for generations. Born from Maria Owens' heartbreak and fear of ever loving again, the curse was meant to protect her heart—but instead became a legacy of loss, bringing tragedy to the men the Owens women dared to love.

As the generations pass, breaking that curse becomes about far more than undoing a spell. It requires courage, sacrifice, family, and the willingness to choose love despite the risk of loss. Again and again, the Owens women discover that the very thing they fear most may also be the thing powerful enough to set them free.

That struggle between darkness and light inspired To Break a Curse.

To Break a Curse is handcrafted with extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, cocoa butter, shea butter, sweet almond oil, and castor oil to create a rich, creamy lather. The deep black base is naturally colored with activated charcoal, while ribbons of cream and muted sage, colored with French green clay and green indigo powder, wind their way through the darkness—a visual representation of hope, protection, and new beginnings emerging from something that has endured for generations.

Each bar is finished with a delicate dusting of biodegradable glitter, adding just a touch of shimmer—as though a little Owens family magic has settled across the top.

The Ingredients

Each featured ingredient was chosen not only for its appearance, but also for the metaphysical properties and symbolism traditionally associated with it in folklore, folk magic, and spiritual practices.

Activated Charcoal – Metaphysically associated with purification, protection, banishing negativity, and transformation. Its deep black color represents the darkness of the Owens family curse and the generations of grief and loss carried with it.

French Green Clay – Traditionally associated with grounding, cleansing, renewal, balance, and drawing away stagnant or unwanted energy. Within the bar, its earthy green tones symbolize healing and the possibility of something new taking root.

Green Indigo Powder – Indigo has long been associated with protection, intuition, spiritual awareness, transformation, and warding away negative energy.

The Essential Oils

The essential oil blend was chosen to complement the deeper meaning behind the bar, creating an aroma that feels earthy, grounding, and quietly protective.

Cedarwood – Traditionally associated with grounding, strength, protection, resilience, and stability.

Rosemary – Long connected with remembrance, protection, healing, and mental clarity.

Frankincense – Traditionally associated with purification, spiritual protection, reflection, and peace.

Lavender – Long associated with peace, healing, protection, tranquility, and emotional balance.

Whether you believe in curses or simply recognize that some patterns are difficult to leave behind, To Break a Curse is a reminder that change often begins with the decision to choose something different.

Let your daily shower or bath become a small ritual of release. Lather away the day, breathe deeply, and take a moment for yourself—a reminder that sometimes breaking what no longer serves us can be its own kind of magic.

Because in the Owens family, the greatest magic was never really the spells.

It was love.

Each bar weighs approximately 4.0 oz.

Because every bar is handcrafted in small batches, slight variations in color, size, swirl, and shimmer are part of what makes each one unique.

Ingredients: Saponified oils of coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil, cocoa butter, shea butter, sweet almond oil, and castor oil; water, sodium hydroxide (lye), activated charcoal, French green clay, green indigo powder, biodegradable glitter, and pure essential oils of cedarwood, rosemary, frankincense, and lavender.

Care Instructions

To help your soap last as long as possible, allow it to dry between uses. A well-draining soap dish, such as a bamboo soap holder, provides ventilation and helps extend the life of your handcrafted bar.
